The Modern Periodic Table is organized in order by its atomic number
Groups and PeriodsThe table is organized into groups and periods. Periods are rows of elements that have the same number of atomic orbitals. While groups or family are columns of elements that share the number of valence electrons.

Valence ElectronsValence electrons are the electrons located in the outside of the atom. This energy level determines what family it falls under and opposite families can bond easily to compounds.

Orbitals
Each electron sub level is divided into s,d,p, and f. These are a representation of orbital shells and sub shells of each element. The s represents alkali metals, d are transition metals, p are groups 13-18, and f block are lanthanides and actinide series.
